Bathroom Remodel Cost Houston
Bathroom Remodel Cost, By Renovation Tier
Published: September 2026
Bathroom remodel cost varies more, relative to the room's size, than almost any other renovation category — a small room can still require a full plumbing, waterproofing, and tile package. As with kitchens, the renovation tier matters more than square footage.
Published estimates vary by source and change over time; treat these as reference points for planning conversations, not as a quote for your specific bathroom. These figures also reflect general one-bathroom renovation costs, not the combined bedroom-and-bath scope of a full primary suite project — see our whole-home remodel cost guide if your project spans multiple rooms.
| Cosmetic refresh | Roughly $8,000–$20,000New fixtures, vanity, and finishes within the existing layout and plumbing footprint. National/regional published estimate. |
| Standard renovation | Roughly $20,000–$45,000New tile, vanity, and fixtures throughout, often with a modest layout adjustment. National/regional published estimate. |
| Full luxury transformation | Roughly $45,000–$100,000+Layout and plumbing reconfigured, freestanding tub or curbless shower, natural stone or custom tile, and custom cabinetry. Published contractor and industry estimates; premium material selections and primary suites can run well above this range. |
Figures reflect widely published national and regional contractor estimates as of 2026, not proprietary Houston-specific data. Actual bids depend on layout, plumbing scope, and material selections.
What Separates the Tiers
Plumbing location. Keeping the toilet, sink, and shower or tub in their existing locations keeps cost toward the lower end of a given tier. Relocating any of them — often the change that makes a small bathroom feel dramatically better — adds cost for both plumbing work and the flooring or wall repair it requires.
Waterproofing and tile. A membrane-based waterproofing system behind tile, rather than cement board alone, costs more upfront but is standard practice at the standard-renovation tier and above. Full-height tile and natural stone add material and labor cost proportional to how much surface area they cover.
Fixtures. A freestanding tub, a curbless shower with a linear drain, and multiple shower heads or a steam feature are common at the luxury tier and each carries its own installation requirements beyond the fixture cost itself.
Cabinetry. Custom vanity cabinetry built to the room, as opposed to a stock or semi-custom vanity, is one of the more visible cost differences between a standard renovation and a full transformation.
Older home plumbing. In Houston homes with original galvanized or cast-iron supply and drain lines, replacing corroded plumbing during the renovation is a cost factor that a generic national estimate won't capture — it's worth asking any professional to inspect and price this separately before finalizing a budget.
